Embracing the Lifecycle

Here's a eye-opener...40% of landfill input is construction & demolition waste. But, 25% of that is readily reuseable. And with a little care and reconditioning much more can be used again, especially when creativity is employed. The bottom line is that our trash is actually our treasure. What to do? Often the main reason this stuff goes to the landfill is there isn't anywhere else for it to go. Enter the Lifecycle Building Center. This Atlanta-based non-profit is providing an alternate to the landfill for building materials. Not only does it have the space to store these materials, but it provides the necessary marketplace for them to be put to use again. And, they even use a volunteer corps to conduct materials removal and collection. Shannon Goodman, LBC executive director, talks to us about the LBC mission and how individuals can participate.
