With international shipment of freight...it's all about the box. The standard shipping container enables the simple transfer of freight between ship, train and truck. The ease of transfer between modes revolutionized shipping, which lead to greater efficiency and ulitmately lower prices for customers. The official term for the technology is intermodal. When shipping by land, the train is king...as it has four times the fuel efficiency as an over-road truck. It is also a safer option, given that trains operate in their own right-of-way. Norfolk Southern railroad is one the nation's largest intermodal rail shippers. Jeff Amado, manager of Norfolk Southern's Whittaker Intermodal Terminal in Austell, Georgia gives me the run-down on the workings of intermodal freight transportation.
